MN School Children will be SAFER!
MN Education Bill was signed by the Governor Dayton on May 22nd, 2013 which includes stock epinephrine provision. Schools will more easily be able to obtain non-patient specific epinephrine and administer it in anaphylactic emergencies.
Way to go MN!
Thanks to all those who advocated on behalf of children with or without identified anaphylactic allergies.
A special thanks to AFAA for their tireless advocacy work at the capitol! For more details follow this link:

Happy Mother's Day FAAS Moms!
Happy Thanksgiving FAAS Friends!
It is with great relief, we survived another holiday at school. This year's annual tradition for 4th grade was GORP. No idea what that is?? Well let me explain, each child brings something to throw into a bowl for a mix of salt & sweet. Sounds food allergy-friendly, huh?? Managing those traditions and facing families and schools are a serious challenge. But, there are great lessons we as parents of kids with food allergies have learned. We know our children's health should never be taken for granted. We respect differences whether you can see them outwardly or not. We have learned to persevere. It is life lessons like these I am grateful for this Thanksgiving.
You are all champions in my mind - the way you simply care for your children. Not everyone knows all that you do as a parent with a child living with food allergies, but I DO. And every moment you are sure your child is included in the activity, pre-screen foods & activities, avoid an unsafe setting but find an even better alternative, carry your child's EpiPen or monitor your child is wearing theirs...even survive GORP! Let those moments remind you just what a CHAMPION you are & most importantly what a champion your child is!
Back-to-School Thoughts by FAAS
5 Things I Know
1. It will be hard.
You aren't alone, so reach out. And don't forget to BREATHE.
2. It can be done.
You can create a plan (IHP/504) that is SAFE, inclusive, and agreed upon by you AND the school.
3. You can minimize the risk at schools.
Sharing the responsibility will minimize your child's risk at school. Food allergy training and education is critical!
4. Creating a plan will support the health & safety of your child.
By creating a SAFETY PLAN (IHP/504) you can minimize the risk and ensure emergency treatment is taken.
5. You won't regret talking about your child's food allergies at school.
Open, honest, ongoing communication is the foundation for a SAFE, healthy, positive school experience for everyone!
